Course objectives
The Film Festival of the Working People was the greatest "film action" (as it was called most often) which took place almost annually from 1948 until 1990 all over Czechoslovakia. The main purpose was to spread movies screened at the Marianské Lázně International Film Festival (taking place in Karlovy Vary since 1950) to a broader audience in open-air cinemas. The range and the focus of this festival were changing in the course of time. The number of locations where the festival took place was also spreading until covering more than 170 cities and towns. The whole event generated the giant corpus of written materials. The seminar will focus especially on the years 1948 – 1959. The introduction will feature an overview of film events in Czechoslovakia, the general cultural background as well as principles of the Film Festival of the Working People.

The central theme will then be an analysis of archival materials and period journalist discourse and searching for answers to such questions as:

• What was the rhetoric of the official festival documents, publications and newspaper articles?
• How did this rhetoric change in the course of time?
• How did the number of festivals locations spread?
• How did the festival fit within other film and cultural events?
• How did the status and concept of the festival change?
• What events did accompany the festival?
• How did their number and nature change?
• What aspects were accentuated in selection of the films?
• How did the dramaturgical structure change?
