Course objectives
The aim of the course, which follows Introduction to Italian history and culture II, is to acquaint students with the key events of 20th century Italian history. Special attention shall be devoted to the fascist dictatorship.
Syllabus
  • Themes: social unrests at the turn of the 19th/20th centuries; Giolitti's Italy; expansion of nationalism; WW I; onset of fascism; state policy of the fascist dictatorship; war of Abyssinia; the Rome-Berlin Axis creation and beginning of WW II; Italians in North Africa; surrender and beginning of Civil War; creeation of Italian Republic; Italy in the post-war period; year of "economic" miracle; policies of the 1960's, "anni di piombo" - ultraleft and ultraright terrorism; political and economic difficulties of the 1980's and 1990's.
