Course objectives
The aim of the subject is to give the students the idea of the development of the Polish language, especially with language contacts, with the beginnings of standard Polish, the characteristics of the language system and its formation. At the end of the course the student should have a more precise idea of the basic dynamic factors in the development of Polish and to know the dominant causes of its contemporary state.
Syllabus
  • 1. The role of language contacts in the initial period of the formation of Slavic literary languages (a general background);
  • 2. The genesis of the Polish literary language;
  • 3. Causative factors in the development of the Polish literary language - sociopolitical, church and religious, cultural and educational;
  • 4. The most important linguistic relics of the Old Polish age;
  • 5. The beginnings and development of Polish spelling;
  • 6. The characteristics of the development of the phonological system;
  • 7. The characteristics of the development of the morphological system;
  • 8. The characteristics of the development of the syntactic system;
  • 9. Linguistic contacts: borrowings from Latin, German, Czech, Italian, French, Ukrainian and Belarusian, Hungarian, Turkish, Russian, English;
  • 10. The characteristics of the development of the lexical system;
  • 11. Polish-Czech linguistic contacts;
  • 12. Lexical Polonisms in the period of the Czech national and linguistic revival;
  • 13. The development of Polish lexicography;
  • 14 Polish grammars in 16th-19th c. period;
  • 15. The accomplishments of Polish linguistics;
  • 16. Changes in the Polish language after 1945;
  • 17. The language of politics in Poland (after 1989).
