Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to:
a) repeat the teaching nad praxis of Unification Movement;
b) locate Unification Movement put into context of new religious movements;
c) apply methods of academic study of religions for study of Unification Movement;
d) analyse development of Unification Movement in the West and in the world;
e) formulate topics of study of new religious movements;
f) compare specificity of Unification Movement and different new religious movements.
The objective of the course is mastering the approach of academic studies of religions when studying and researching one of the most famous and discussed new religions - the Unification Church. The course deals with the doctrine and praxis of this religious group, the context of its foundation and existence, history of the group, public and academic discussion about the group. The participants of the course have the opportunity to discuss the issue with the major representative of the Unification movement in the Czech republic.

  • 1) The context of the foundation of the group and its existence
  • 2) The founder of the Unification Church - rev. Moon
  • 3) The basic text: The Divine Principle
  • 4) The doctrine and the praxis
  • 5) History of the group worldwide and in the Czech republic
  • 6) Questions and issues connected to the existence of the group

Lectures, reading, class discussion.
Assessment methods
The assesment of the course is by "kolokvium" - discussion on a student's text during which the student demostrates his knowledge of the given issue and the ability of a creatice and academic aprroach [the text requirements: 25 000 characters, bibliography, notes]
