Course objectives
Having completed the course, the students will be able to interpret the terms assimilation, integration in the context of everyday (political, media, etc.) discourse. The students will get specifically acquainted with the history of migration processes in Vienna and will be able to understand better the issues of current European migrations as well as integration processes

  • Integration, disintegration, assimilation, acculturation Brief historical overview of migrations to Vienna Ethnic composition of the city Ethnization, ethnic infrastructure Immigration politics and political discourse concerning immigration Integration of immigrants and integration politics The so called “second generation“ (questions of ethnic, cultural, language identity, semilingualism, etc.) Comparative perspectives
