Course objectives
At the end of this course the student will be able to: orientate himself in contemporary exhibition practice and dramaturgical strategies used in the presentation of new media; characterize the current curatorial and dramaturgical trends of exhibitions and film shows and festivals; explain the specific forms of audience perception of the audiovisual work of art in the context of the gallery space and cinema; explicate an active and passive spectator mode in the particular cases;
Syllabus
  • Art as a technological, institutional and psychological “machine”: the term of apparatus, dispositiv.
  • Relativisation of the traditionally defined formats and media – “art”, “photograph”, “movie” or “mass media” and linking and search interfaces and mutual inspiration; intermediality.
  • New Media retrospectively: photograph, film, radio, television, video and other technologies that significantly influenced and transformed the traditional forms of artistic creation. Selected historical examples of the new media forms (and avant-garde film, Kinoautomat, etc.).
  • Institutional context: structural setting of the visual and cinematographic industry, representative examples of shows and exhibitions.
  • “Institutional absorption” – definition of the certain trends deconstructing traditional institutional context, “substitution of the functions”.
  • As the movie “hangs on the wall” and “creates sculptures”: technological standards and installation concepts in the presentation of new media in the gallery. Installation – the current “medium” of art.
  • Perception – theory of the viewer with the reference to the institutional framework: early form of film shows, the situation “cinema” and the situation “gallery”, identification, the passive film viewer and active visitor of galleries.
