Course objectives
Students will be acknowledges with typical or distinct works of new media art. In first semester we will focus on art production retrospectively understood as predecessors of new media art, with special focus on 20 century.
Syllabus
  • Autumn semester
  • Theme: Archeology of media: man-machine concept in a first half of the 20century.
  • Metropolis (F. Lang, 1927), Modern Times (Ch. Chaplin, 1936), Man with Movie camera (D. Vertov, 1929)
  • Theme: Predecesors of new media art, art avant-garde.
  • Futurusts and sound – Marinetti’s sound collages. The Last Machine (document about beginnings of film), Experimental film: DADA cinema. J. Cage – series Imaginary Landscapes.
  • Theme: Phenomemon of Expo
  • 24.11. Edgard Varèse - Le Corbusier - Iannis Xenakis: Poème électronique (Expo, 1958). The Legendary multimedia installation in Philips pavilion. Laterna Magika (Expo 1958, document). Kinoautomat (R. Činčera, DVD).
Teaching methods
AV projection, seminar, reading.
Assessment methods
Essay on chosen topic (min. 5 pages/9000 signs + list of bibliographical notes and title page). The theme of the essay can be chosen from topics related to the presented documents and films.
