Course objectives
The course deals with the theories of relationship of nationalism and religion. The theories are applied to selected examples in the history of modern Japan.
At the end of the course students will be able to demonstrate the knowledge of selected theories of nationalism and religion; review selected theories of the relationship of religion and nationalism; interpret the characteristics of the theories; apply the theories to the examples from the history of modern Japan.

  • 0. Introduction to the course;
  • 1. – 11. Selected theories and concepts of the relationship of religion and nationalism, application to the examples from the history of modern Japan;
  • 12. Presentation of student papers, final discussion.
