Course objectives
The course offers the survey of Celtic languages in their diachronic and synchronic perspective. Students should be acquainted with fragments of the ancient continental languages and structures of the modern insular languages.
Syllabus
  • 1. Witness of the antique authors about Celts. 2. Territorial dispersion of Celts in various periods of their history. 3. Position of the Celtic branch within the Indo-European langure family. 4. Various model sof the classification of the Celtic languages. 5. Continental Celtic languages (Celtiberian, Lepontic, Gaulish) and interpretation of thein epigraphic monuments. 6. Insular Celtic languages (Welsh, Cornish, Breton; Irish, Manx, Scottish Gaelic): thein description and sociolingvistic situation. 7. Literary heritage of Irish and Welsh.

Teaching methods
Teacher introduces his students in the questions of classification and comparative grammar of Celtic languages. A part of students presents their own descriptions of neo-Celtic languages, the other interpret the chosen texts.
Assessment methods
The output consists in a written description of a chosen topic, most frequently it is a description of one of the insular Celtic languages or their comparison. Alternatively the edition and translation of fragment sof important texts in Middle Iris hor Middle Welsh is offered.
