Course objectives
The course examines different representations of literary characters and their function from the Middle Ages to the XXth century and aims to connect the contemporary aesthetic and ethical situation with the evolution of the human mind. The interpretation of literary works is confronted with the fine arts and partially with music and is related to the history of philosophical conceptions. The course associates two aspects: 1. Analysis of the different types of artistic representation of reality linked to the development of genres and literary movements; the connexion between document, postulate and fiction; 2. the search for human identity throughout the centuries, its constant qualities and its modifications, the link between a person's character and actions — or the absence of such a link. It asks whether, and to what degree, we can know the world's reality and understand man's feelings and actions. The literary analysis aims to find an answer to the chaos of our period.
Syllabus
  • The course discusses the question of continuity and discontinuity in the development of narrative fiction in Czech and world literature, its manifestations in novels and poems and its theoretical commentary. It asks about the specificity of Czech literature : in which genres and aesthetic movements is it to be found ? What criterion do we use to define it ? Language ? Territorial affiliation ? Something else?
