Course objectives
The course will have, the nature of a lecture, and of practical work: students will observe the development of translation methods on specific originals and their Czech translations. By doing so, students will get familiar with the rules of literary (or more generally - written) Czech.
Syllabus
  • The course will be divided into two parts: development of the translation before 1945 and after 1945.

  • The lessons concerning the post-war period will be focused on selected problems of translating French literary text into Czech, in context of wider cultural development in Czechoslovakia/the Czech Republic and in France. Reading of selected texts will be an important part of the study of the post-war translation.

Teaching methods

Assessment methods
Condition for admission to the colloquium's active participation in teaching (80%). The colloquium will consist of two parts. Z. Raková: During semester: oral report in French focused on the comparison of two Czech translations of important works of French. The examination period: oral colloquium exploring the knowledge of the development of the Czech translation of French befor 1945. J. Seidl: In the second part of the colloquium will be verified by reading the required literature.
