Course objectives
The goal of this course is to introduce the students to the existencialist literature, a movement developing in the area of Portuguese literature particulary since the end of 1940s. After the introductory lessons where we will address the overall situation in Portuguese literature and the work of Raul Brandão, the predecessor of the Portuguese literature with existencialist theme, we will focus on analysis of specific prosaic texts by selected authors. We will pursue the common features of the works and their relation to given historic context. We will also aim our attention to the turn of the analysed texts away from neorealism, subsequent possible approaching the trends of contemporary literature and reception of the works.
At the end of this course students should be able to:
1) explain literary development in the broader cultural and social context;
2) understand selected works of Portuguese existencialist literature;
3) describe existencialism as literary movement;
4) articulate his/her ideas on the basis of reader’s experience.
