Course objectives
The seminar is aimed at understanding and interpreting the most important figures in Czech poetry of the first half of the twentieth century. Students read, analyze, interpret and compare in a broader context of poetry collections and texts produced in this country in a given period of time, acquiring the basic techniques and methods of artistic interpretation of the text and necessary terminological equipment.
Absolvents of this course will learn to perceive and interpret poetic text. Student will be given the theoretical background for analytic and synthetic distinction, acquire skills in the artistic interpretation of the text, taught the use of secondary critical literature (when examining contemporary reader’s reception of the text in the period) and literary history books (in adequate insertion of the literary work in a broader historical context).

  • 2. The echoes of symbolism in the poetry of Czech anarchism (Březina, Gellner)
  • 3. Prose in poem as a statement about the existential experience of poetic image (Deml, Halas)
  • 4. Unwitting creativity breaking the bonds of ideology (Seifert early, early Listopad)
  • 5. Calendar cycle as an image of variable context (Toman, Seifert)
  • 6. Playfulness and sadness of poetism (Nezval: Abeceda, Seifert: Na vlnách TSF)
  • 7. Czech and Slovak surrealism or superrealism - communicating vessels? (Nezval, Dilong)
  • 8. Poetry of deep questioning and existential anxiety (Halas, Holan)
