Course objectives
The course will be conceived as interdisciplinary with the aim of transmitting the richness of texts of the older literature focused on the natural science. The course is designed in particular for students of the medical fields of study. The set of ten lectures will begin with the presentation of the writings of Osvald Croll (1560-1609). His European known textbook of natural science Basylica chymica, including also the description of human body and illnesses, was edited in 1608 and became a bestseller.
Subsequently, the subjects of the medieval literature, the literature of the Renaissance humanism and the literature of the baroque epoch will succeed in chronological order.
Also, the attention will be paid to the Old Czech medical terms of illnesses within the scope of more complex preview, including the contemporary conception of the various fields of study, comprehending the botany, astronomy, astrology, geography. After finishing the course students will - gain an overview of the most important writings of the old Czech literature that pay attention to the nature and man;
- understand the interdisciplinary character of the knowledge of Middle Age and Modern Period;
- understand the way of processing the contemporary knowledge in the concrete texts;
- be aware of the position of the natural sciences in the extensive context of subjects and genres of the old literature.

  • 1. Osvlad Croll: Mysterious naturalist and medical man of the court of Rudolf?
  • 2. The medieval "Fyzilogář" as a source of information on the man and nature.
  • 3. The Renaissance travel book – confrontation of the concept of the world based on the reading and individual experience (Oldřich Prefát z Vlkanova and Kryštof Harant z Polžic a Bezdružic and their voayges to the Holly Land).
  • 4. The "Herbarium" and "Knihy lékařské" by Mattioli: their importance and reception in the Czech environment.
  • 5. Tomáš Jordán z Klauzenburk – the Renaissance medical man and balneologist.
  • 6. How did our ancestors travel to the so-called exotic lands a what did they write about it? (Persia, Iceland, Lappland, Mexico).
  • 7. Theatrum as the encyclopedia of world and man, its traditions and forms in the Czech literature of humanism.
  • 8. The "Lucidář" and its importance for the popular reader of the baroque epoch, the reflections of the "popular world" with his healer knowledge and magic.
  • 9. The baroque homiletics with regard to the so-called popular medicine.
  • 10. Osvald Croll and others: In what aspects are their writings incentive for us? (summary of the course).
