Course objectives
The seminar aims to familiarize students with art production in Europe during VIII. and IX. century. The seminar will relativize the concept of "Carolingian art", will replace this concept in the historiographical context, and will point out the complexity of artistic situation in Europe from Rome to France and Aachen. Finally, the seminar focuses on issues relating to the legitimacy of representing Christ, the Mother of God and the Saints.
