Course objectives
This course will study the Dutch painting of the 17th-18th centuries and focused on the art collections in the Czech Republic. The aim is to provide practical information and exercise to students who will learn how to examine the paintings and doing archive research to have the closer contact with originals. Throughout the course the students will learn about all genres of the Dutch painting and theirs main representatives. The attention will be also devoted to technique and technology of the painting, iconography, history of collecting as well as to different interpretation approaches.
Syllabus
  • Introduction: an overview of literature and actual research on Dutch painting, tools (digital archives, online databases etc.), general outline of collections in Czech Republic with Dutch painting. Background of the Dutch Painting: history, sociology, religion, culture and economy - all in the context with art; roots of the Dutch 17th century painting (late mannerism). Pre-rembrandtists generation, Utrecht caravaggism, Dutch classicism. History and Portrait Painting (Rembrandt and his pupils and followers, specifics in history painting in European context, Portraits – representation of burghers, group portraits) Genre Painting (main characteristic of the category, its place in the hierarchy of genres, iconography, specialists). Landscape and Architecture Painting (the genesis of landscape painting in the 17th century, marine panting, Dutch Italianates; Painting of Architecture – manuals and treatises on perspective, process of realization). Still Life Painting (main principles: space, composition, light, volumes..., iconography, subcategory and representatives). Technique and Technology of Painting, teaching and workshop practice (Rembrandt and his studio), copying of paintings (expertise of painting – connoisseurship). Art Market (function, economic aspects, prices...), commissioners and collectors. History of Collecting the Dutch Painting in Bohemia and Moravia in 17th-18th centuries. Study Trips: the mentioned topics above will be also discussed in different collections (museums, galleries, castles...) as well we in the conservation studios (Národní galerie v Praze, Moravská galerie v Brně, Muzeum Olomouc etc.).
