- Course objectives
- One of the main characteristic of Byzantine Art is to re-elaborate Ancient art. Byzantine illuminated manuscripts, in particular, show a lot of elements of ancient tradition. First of all, the pictorial technique. In fact, byzantine illuminators use the so-called ‘papyrus style’, inspired by the Roman-Hellenistic painted scrolls. Style and iconography are in connection with the ancient art ever, especially during the ‘Macedonian Renaissance’, when this heritage is officially supported by the imperial court.
