Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to: understand the development of culture concept in history; explain the different conception of culture across humanities and within the frame of the same discipline; critically appraise the semiotics approach to culture; interpret semiotics terms.
Syllabus
  • The concept of culture in history until the end of the 19th century.
  • The trends of culture theory in the 20th century.
  • Marxism and structuralism.
  • Culture and nature, culture and its origin, culture and game etc.
  • Typology of definitions of culture.
  • Semiotics approach to culture.
  • Analysis of the publication by Umberto Eco Theory of semiotics (several lectures).
  • Tartu school.
