Course objectives
The aim of the course is to get students acquainted with the content and intentions of 16-17 th ct. grammars of Czech.
Syllabus
  • On the basis of commented collective reading, students will get acquainted with the content and intentions of 16-17th ct. grammars of Czech (commentaries will be provided by the teacher as well as by the students, active participation based on homework is recommended). The course will proceed chronologically, from so-called Náměšť grammar to the grammar by Václav Jan Rosa. During the term, each student will present a brief seminar paper on one from assigned additional topics, such as tradition of grammars in Europe, ancient prosody, Slavonic elements etc. (topics will be assigned depending on the number of students and on their previous academic interests). Collective reading will cover Czech and Latin texts – at least general knowledge of the language of ancient Romans is therefore advisable (this is an advantage, not a prerequisite – readiness to work with texts is sufficient).
