Course objectives
The aim of the course is to give a general overview of Italian art from the Romanticism to the Avant-garde. Student should be able to acquire a basic knowledge of the Italian masters, of the regional art schools and styles. He should be able to recognize the different artistic productions in the right historical period and in the cultural context. Student should learn to describe an artwork with richest as possible Italian technical vocabulary.
Syllabus
  • History of Italian art: XIX-XX century :
  • 1- The group Macchiaioli in Florence.
  • 2- Divisionismo (Pointillism) in the Italian painting.
  • 3- The Futurism movement of Marinetti: manifests and texts
  • 4 - The Futurist painting, sculpture and theatre: Boccioni, Balla, Depero.
  • 5- De Chirico's Metafica and his correspondence with the poetry of Ungaretti.
  • 6 - The Magic Realism: Carrà, Morandi, Sironi between the world wars.
  • 7- The social painting of Guttuso and its connection with the writer Moravia.
  • 8- The abstract tendence in the Vedova, Burri, Capogrossi paintings.
  • 9- Experiments and theory: Spatialism of Fontana.
  • 10- The kinetic art and experimentations in the sixties in Milan.
  • 11- The second Italian avant-garde: the movement Arte Povera (Poor art).
  • 12- The Italian comics.

Teaching methods
Lectures. The course is based on theoretical and linguistic preparation of the student and on presentation of photographic material of Italian artworks. The student should focus both on the visual material and on the texts listed in the bibliography.
Assessment methods
Written examination: preparation of a critical text about an artwork, chosen by the student before among the topics of the course, and his presentation during a lesson. The attendance to the course is recommended.
