Course objectives
The seminar has for its goal the presentation of the specificities of the Czech Avant-Garde in Central European and more broadly in European context. In the first part, we will focus on the historical avant-garde in the context of the interwar democratic Czechoslovakia. In order to illustrate the different trajectories in terms of their relation to the avant-garde, we will concentrate on the figures of Jaroslav Seifert, Vítězslav Nezval and Karel Teige.We will then continue by stressing the importance of the Czech surrealism and its lasting influence on the Czech art throughout the 20th century. We will then follow by commenting on numerous post-avant-garde creations of the 1950s, especially on the works of Jiří Kolář, Bohumil Hrabal or Egon Bondy. To complete the reflection on the history of the Czech Avant-Garde of the 20th century, we will discuss the question of the reception of the avant-garde heritage both in the official culture and in the alternative one.
