- Course objectives
- The main objective of the seminar is to work with sources and literature. Special attention will be paid to the phenomenon of the Viennese modern. Student will be competent in individual application of analysis of a selected work of art.
- Syllabus
- 1. Viennese operetta
- 2. Operetta and irony, S. Freud and joke
- 3. Music: E. Hanslick, J. Brahms G. Mahler, A. Schönberg.
- 4. Ringstrasse - visualisation of values of a social class. Viennese art nouveau. Wiener Werkstätte. Expressionism. Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Adolf Loos, Oskar Kokoschka.
- 5. Literature and drama: Arthur Schnitzler, Hugo von Hofmannsthal. Joseph Roth. Robert Musil, Karl Kraus.
- 6. Present reception of these problems - e.g. Carl E. Schorske, Cl. Magris, M. Csáky, research project Wien und Zentraleuropa um 1900.

- Theme of the seminar essay has to be agreed with the teacher during the semester and a commeneted list of literature has to be delivered via the Homework Vault by February 2009.
