Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to understand the wider political context and the state of cultural policy in the post-war Europe. They will be able to reflect on the changes in the film industries of Czechslovakia, Poland and GDR. Students will get a knowledge of the relation between film industry and the governmental bodies and will be able to use the tool of comparative analysis.
Syllabus
  • - methodological introduction: the tradition of comparative research; processes of cultural transfer; so called Sovietization and the case of the Conference of film practitioners in the socialist Countries
  • - political situation in Czechoslovakia, GDR and Poland; cultural politics in these countries and their mutual relations - co-productions in the Soviet bloc - examples of war movies, production for children; case studies: Mezi proudy (Provisional Liberty); Hoří, má panenko (The Firemen s Ball)
  • co-prouctions DEFA-Barrandov: musicals, Indianerfilme, movies for children (case studies: Strašná žena; Synové Velké medvědice; Tři oříšky pro Popelku)
  • - comparison of the distribution systems in the three countries. Cinema distribution as a tool for integration into the socialist society
  • - local history of exhibition: Brno, Leipzig, Poznan. Cinema theatres and the reality of cinema distribution
  • - cinema attendance and film preferences. The most attended movies in the three countries, similarities and differences in the tradition of the preferences
  • - film reception in Brno and Leipzig. City cinema culture in the socialist dictatorship.
