Course objectives
The aim of this course is to introduce to the students the historical context of the 16th century (Reform, Counter-Reformation, Council of Trent, birth of censorship institutions, Index librorum prohibitorum, reaction of authors, correctors and publishers towards bans ordered by censorship institutions), which had considerable influence on the published texts.
Syllabus
  • Students will manly become acquainted with texts of novellas from various authors (e.g. Giovanni Boccaccio, Francesco Straparola, Niccolò Machiavelli, Matteo Bandello, Giovanni Fiorentino, Masuccio Salernitano, the anonymous Il novellino) which they will read from an anthology.They will read samples of censored texts from certain authors such as Giovanni Boccaccio or Francesco Straparola (from digitised reproductions of 16th century prints).
