Course objectives

The aim of the course is to teach students to express themselves accurately and correctly in a foreign language about basic specifically Czech cultural, historical, geographical and political life and institutions focused on a potential guide activity, or rather preparation of information and promotional materials of regional and also superregional character. Students will learn the principles of practical transcription and transliteration of Czech proper names in written foreign text through translations of factual texts; they will be introduced to rules of the grammatical adaptation of Czech proper names in Russian language system.

Syllabus

• Cultural and historical causes of differences of Czech and Russian/Czech life and institutions
• Principles of translation of specific Czech/Russian cultural life and institution into Russian/Czech (non-equivalent vocabulary)
• Principles of common transcription from Czech (Latin alphabet) into Russian (Cyrillic alphabet) and vice versa
• Main principles of transfer of Czech/Russian proper names into Russian/Czech texts
• Transfer of Czech/Russian anthroponyms into Russian/Czech
• Transfer of Czech/Russian toponyms into Russian/Czech
• Principles of translation of Czech/Russian institutions and organizations into Russian/Czech
• Principles of translation of Czech/Russian names of products of material culture into Russian/Czech
• Principles of translation of Czech/Russian names of products of spiritual culture into Russian/Czech
