Course objectives
By the end of the semester, students should be able to:
- explain how are different cultural source (above all religious tradition) used in creating an image of contemporary family and its functions;
- to gain an insight how are religious tradition employed in forming everyday actions;
- explain the influence of the second generation on the change of NRMs;
- to understand the issue of transmission of tradition in the family;
- define and discuss various methods for research.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction to the course;
  • 2. Family, society, kinship, relatedness;
  • 3. Family and modern society, family and state, (lost of) family autonomy;
  • 4. Family, socialisation and tradition (intergeneration relationship and transmission);
  • 5. Second generation - mainstream religion, adaptation of tradition;
  • 6. Second generation – case of migration;
  • 7. Second generation – NRMs, changes of movements and families;
  • 8. Second generation – case study - research of one specific movement;
  • 9. Actors of religious socialisation;
  • 10. Gender: construction of womanhood and contemporary spirituality;
  • 11. Intergeneration solidarity, coexistence, old age and dying;
  • 12. Quest for social cohesion - "family as value", power of community;
  • 13. Final discussion.
