Course objectives
In the thematically focused tutorials the students will be acquainted with the main development tendencies in contemporary Czech literature. They will be able to identify the contexts of these tendencies on the basis of their comparison with the production of previous ages. They will also develop skills for analysing and interpreting texts written by contemporary Czech prose writers, as well as properly placing them within contemporary literary output. They will be able to confront their reading experiences with metatexts featuring academic discourse.
Syllabus
  • Introduction to the topic, historical and sociocultural context. Outline of primary and secondary sources. Is contemporary Czech literature in crisis?
  • On the waves of postmodernism: Michal Ajvaz: Lucemburská zahrada; Jáchym Topol: Noční práce; Chladnou zemí.
  • Self-narration. Typology of the male narrator: Emil Hakl: Intimní schránka Sabriny Black; O rodičích a dětech; Jan Balabán: Zeptej se táty; Možná že odcházíme.
  • Fictionalized biography. The question of fiction and authenticity: Jan Němec: Dějiny světla; Martin Reiner: Básník.
  • Searching for heroes: Jan Novák: Zatím dobrý; Miloš Doležal: Jako bychom dnes zemřít měli.
  • Topos of the countryside, how it was and how it is now: Jiří Hájíček: Selské baroko; Rybí krev; Anna Bolavá: Do tmy.
