Course objectives
The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the theory analysis of qualitative data and help them acquire practical skills of analysis, so that they are able to independent work after completing the course. The course offers a practical introduction and instructions of processing and interpretation of qualitative field data for the researchers in the field of ethnology. The format of the course is based on theoretical lessons extended by practical exercises, discussions and seminar. The course follows the course FF: ETBA07 Methods and techniques of ethnological research. During the course, students will practice work with software Atlas.ti for textual data analysis, learn to use software for transcription of data and process a visual material.
Syllabus
  • 1) Introduction to the course - introduction to with the course content, assignment of seminar papers 2) Transcription of data - F4 program 3) Introduction to the analysis of qualitative data - basic analytical tools; Three types of phase transformations and qualitative data: description, analysis and interpretation 4) The analytical procedures - a case study; analysis in biographical research, narrative analysis, content analysis 5) Quality Control Research - Basic Techniques 6) Atlas.ti: The benefits of digitization of data - putting the program Atlas.ti, the establishment of the project and primary documents 7) Atlas.ti: Creating memos, free excerpts (quotes), basic coding 8) Atlas.ti: advanced encoding session between the codes, family codes, creation of conceptual schema 9) archiving and secondary analysis of qualitative data 10) Development of visual material 11) Development of visual material 12) Final seminar with presentations of research projects
