Course objectives
The aim of the course is to understand one of the key themes of the Bohemian Reformation – the term Antichrist, and also the reformatory concept of eschatology (the study of last things). The topic will be followed not only in the work (Czech translations), but also in the lives of the Bohemian reformers. In regard to this aim, students will be introduced to the character of other medieval (mainly Christian) reflections on the last things, and thus they will be able to consider the Bohemian Reformation in the broader medieval context on one hand, and on the other hand, to study other concrete forms of medieval eschatology independently.
Syllabus
  • I. Forms of medieval Christian eschatology, the issue of the term eschatology and the main eschatological terms; Julianus Toletanus (of Toledo), Petrus Lombardus II. Development of the antichrist idea in our country and Europe up to the beginning of the Bohemian Reformation – the Bible; patristics; Byzantine influence; Antichrist as the topic of works of various purposes and genres: e.g. commentary literature, Adso Menasteriensis and the situation around the year 1000; further trends – the study of heresy, prophecy, Ludus paschalis, De periculis novissimorum temporum, Nicolaus Liranus (of Lyra), Iohannes Rupescissa, John Wyclif etc... and their influence and reflection in the Czech environment (mainly in the 13th and 14th century). III. The main authors and works of the Bohemian Reformation - not only works with the relevant themes will be studied, but also the practical impact of the Antichrist issue on the lives of their authors will be considered - the so-called predecessors of the Hussite movement and the predecessors of Jan Hus - "another Elias" and "the father of the Bohemian Reformation" Milíč of Kroměříž (correspondence and treatises); "the master of Paris" Matthew of Janov (systematic treatise literature) - Jan Hus (preaching - synodal, to the people, university; correspondence, treatise literature) - "hussite theologist" Jakoubek of Stříbro - Nicolaus de Dresda (of Dresden) - Jenský kodex - Nicolaus Pilgramensis (of Pelhřimov) - other literary and pictorial depictions of the Hussite period
