Course objectives
The introduction course focuses on the history of cinema technology from the medially blurred beginnings to the precarious digital present. The specific material aspects of film and cinema will be understood in the context of aesthetic and stylistic development of the medium, functioning of the global cinema market, or the interaction of the technical history with social and political ones. Among other things, it will focus on film preservation and its availability to contemporary researchers in various forms and through various distribution channels.
Main objective: Students will learn about the technical history of cinema.
Syllabus
  • Film strip, its materials, formats and life.
  • Apparatus used for filming, post-production and exhibition.
  • Possibilities of film handling and editing.
  • Cinema space and film performance.
  • Digitization in production, post-production and distribution.
  • Archival life of the film and "original", digitization of archive films.
  • Current trends: film survival, multimedia performance using found footage and design principles, alternative environmental labs.
