Course objectives
This facultative lecture continues the obligatory course named Introduction into the linguistic study that is given in the first semester of the baccalaurean level. The lecture will be devoted to the history of the Russian linguistics, just from the earliest times up to the 20th century. It will focus on methods of the linguistic research. Students will learn about the important researchers – about founders of Moscow’s, Kazan’s linguistic schools and about their successors in following generations.
Syllabus
  • 1) The commencement of the grammatical reasoning in Old Russia.
  • 2) Fist Russian grammar book issued in Russian language; Some preceding works.
  • 3) M. V. Lomonosov and his successors in the II part of the 18th century.
  • 4) General, philosophical grammars in the I part of the 19th century.
  • 5) Representatives of historic-comparative method in Russia of the I part of the 19th century (A. Ch. Vostokov, I. I. Sreznevskij, F. I. Buslajev).
  • 6) General problems of linguistics at the end of 19th century (A. A. Potenbnja, M.M. Pokrovskij, N. V. Kruševskij).
  • 7) Moscow’s linguistic school (F. F. Fortunatov, F. Je. Korš, A. A. Šachmatov, A. M. Peškovskij).
  • 8) Kazan’s linguistic school (I. A. Baudoin de Courtenay, N. V. Kruševskij, V. A. Bogorodickij, L. V. Ščerba).
  • 9) Successors of traditions of Kazan’s linguistic school (Je. D. Polivanov, L. P. Jakubinskij, L. V. Ščerba).
