- Course objectives
- The primary goal of the course is to provide an introduction into Buddhist thought in East Asia, presenting the basic religious ideas of various Buddhist schools, emerging from both continental and Japanese traditions. Also, the intention is to overcome two millennia of Buddha's thought and provide a perspective on Buddhism in the present era, as it is practiced in Asia as well as in the United States and Europe. The motive behind this is to demonstrate that Buddhism is far from ancient or outlived religious system practiced isolated within monastic walls, but to illustrate original Buddhist ideas and their actualization in the present world, Eastern and Western combined.
