Course objectives
The aim of the subject mainly oriented on ERASMUS students, a lecture with a seminar, is to demonstrate the poetological significance of Russian classical literature, its connection with the traditions of West-European literatures, its development since the Middle Ages up to the beginnings of modernism, the specific character of Russian classical literature as a predecessor of the world 20th-century modernism, a link to French, English, and American literature, international significance of Russian literature, the most influential Russian classical writers.
Syllabus
  • Beginnings:
  • The origin of Russian literature and its early contacts: Slavonic World, Cyrill-Methodius period, Old Church Slavonic, Byzantine Emnpire, translations from Byzantine Greek
  • Russian literature and Turkic impact – a case study on the Igoŕ Tale
  • The revival of European influence: Russian humanism, Renaissance, baroque
  • Russian literature and the West – neoclassicism, sentimentalism, preromanticism, romanticism: roots and contexts
  • European literature and Russian classical literature: poetry, drama, novel
  • Russian literature and its world significance
  • Russian literature and the Slavs
  • Russian Writers and the West
