Course objectives
The course focuses on medicine, health and lifestyle in the antiquity. The aim of the subject is to acquaint the students with the view of medicine and health in the Graeco-Roman antiquity and in the states of old-oriental type. Further on the acquaint the students with lifestyle in selected states and with the type of ideal lifestyle in the antiquity on basis of comparison with the ideal lifestyle of present. After completion of the course, the students will orientate in the level of ancient medicine and lifestyles of the individual ancient empires and states.
Learning outcomes
After successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- compare ancient medicine with the present,
- understand the significance of the ancient medicine and the look at health for our present world,
- take advice for their own lifestyle and to know what was and is beneficial to human health,
- understand some specialist terms,
- understand significance of some men (Hippokratés, Galénos, ...) and cultures with their views on the health, lifestyle and treatment of patients,
- not to look back on ancient medicine as something behind the times,
- orientate in the primary sources and specialist literature dealing with this topic.
