Course objectives
The aim of this course is the understanding of the key forms of the media (re)presentation of the culture. Our attention should be focused on the contemporary masmedia (technical press, newspaper, broadcasting, television and internet). An important part of the course will be payed to the talks with the media representatives.

Course was supported by the OPVK project "Inovace uměnovědných studijních oborů na Filozofické fakultě Masarykovy univerzity".
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction, definition of basic concepts (media, sign, communication, etc.) 2. Printed media - from Gutenberg to  iPad. The critical function of the press. 3. Principles of editorial work in the trade press   -   discussion with an editor of the periodical press 4. Among the printed and electronic media. Media and their memory. 5. Archaeology of the radio 6. Anatomy of the radio - talk with the editor of ČRo 7. Television and its specifics 8. Culture on the screen - a discussion with editor ČT 9. Advertising - from advertising to propaganda  ; strategies of media persuasion 10. The role of critical theory in the analysis of media content 11. New media, mobile media - the construction of individual space 12. Internet and (his) culture

Teaching methods
Theoretical and practical introduction into the practice of mass media (radio, TV) and new media (internet). Lectures on the history of media, discussions with professionals.
Assessment methods
Lecture. To obtain a credit, final essay must be handed in the extent of 9800-12600 characters. One of the following topics is required: 1. Memory of a media - amnesia versus immortality 2. Press and a culture - playmates or rivals? 3. Radio as a multimedia? 4. Art shining on the screen vs. Art of the shining screen 5. A big bubble? How new are new media?
