Course objectives
The course will focus on intermedial and multimodal issues from a theoretical and methodological point of view. The aim is to offer a broad view of how similarities and differences between media types can be construed. It will be argued that what we perceive as different forms of media are always necessarily deeply entangled in each other and that it is hence not really possible to say much about one media type without (implicitly or explicitly) comparing it to others. Initially, the notion of medium will be placed within a communicative framework. After that, media modalities (classes of media traits) and their importance for both individual media products and media types will be highlighted. Finally, the course will highlight two main viewpoints on media interrelations: the synchronic and the diachronic perspectives.
Syllabus
  • The course is constituted by three intimately connected lessons. While the teacher will do some lecturing based on a structured theoretical framework, the aim of the lessons is to promote discussions concerning fundamental issues of media interrelations. The students are thus expected to actively engage in the lessons by way of asking questions and taking part of emerging debates. 1: COMMUNICATION AND MEDIALITY 2: MEDIA MODALITIES: MULTIMODALITY AND MEDIA INTERRELATIONS 3: MEDIA INTEGRATION AND MEDIA TRANSFORMATION
