Course objectives
The main aim of the seminar is to develop students’ computer literacy in keeping with the needs of archival practice. Graduates will acquire basic skills for working with applications and data systems, digitization, search activities and presenting outputs.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to:
- explain basic IT concepts;
- characterize database systems and computer networks;
- use basic office tools in archival practice;
- explain the specifics of basic software programmes used in archival practice;
- explain the basic concepts of electronic records management and e-government;
- describe basic digitization initiatives by Czech archives.
Syllabus
  • Basic IT concepts, text editors, spreadsheets, database systems, data processing, computer networks, the basics of graphics and typography, presentations, digitization, basic programmes in archival practice, electronic records management, data boxes, Czech archival science on the internet, principles of security.
Teaching methods
Seminar based on theoretical and practical experience. Some of the seminars will take place at selected archival sites involved in digitization (especially the Brno City Archive).
Assessment methods
Credit based on completing a practical assignment (30%), a test (50%) and a discussion of the test and practical assignment (20%).
