Cíle předmětu
The seminar will be taught by Meekyung MacMurdie, University of Bern, from the 23rd to the 26th of November. This seminar serves as an introduction to the arts of the book in the Islamic world between the eighth to sixteenth centuries, from the earliest Qur’ans to the lavish narratives of the Timurids. Although the course is organized roughly according to chronology, we will pay particular attention to questions about materials and facture; reading and performance; copying and originality; the relationship between text and image; and the exchange of knowledge. Lectures, practical exercises on facsimile, and discussions will be supplemented by an in-person viewing session at the Österreichische Nationalbibliothek.
Výstupy z učení
Students will become familiar with major historical concepts and actors, with an eye to the diversity of Islamic artistic production and the dynamic values and meanings evinced by manuscripts in different historical periods and places. They will practice close looking, and develop skills in formal and material description in order to persuasively translate what they see into verbal and written arguments. At the same time, they will critically read and analyse primary and secondary sources, and be exposed to major debates in the field of Islamic art. They will also understand foundational terms and methods of Islamic codicoloy, and apply this learning when examining manuscripts at the ÖNB.
