Course objectives
New trends in television production can be seen mainly in the development of television formats. Goal of this class is to introdukce modern trends in the area of television formats, to show their overview, explain what television format is, what are the conditions and circumstances of its formation, how does a television format incorporate and enforce itself in television broadcasting and how is it modified if the license is sold to other countries. Foreign titles, that will be shown in this course, were chosen because they bring new ideas and methods of audiovisual production and because they were evaluated by both viewers and critics. Students will get to know program manuals, presentations and scripts of some projects. These formats will be compared to certain recent local projects.
Learning outcomes
Student will be:
- acquires a basic orientation in current domestic of television formats;
- understand the roles of individual televisions in the domestic market;
- understand the origin, development and production of television formats and the creation of a program composition;
- will get an orientation in Czech reality-tv.
Syllabus
  • 1. New trends in television production.
  • 2. Introduction to the terms "television format" and "television genre". Overview of genres and types of formats.
  • 3. How is the development of a television program and especially the development of a television format.
  • 3.1. Screenwriting and dramaturgical preparation - from the initial idea to the program manual of the so-called bible tv format.
  • 3.2. Production preparation - production potential of the format, implementation research, budget, technology.
  • 3.3. Inclusion of a television program in the broadcasting scheme.
  • 3.4. License sales to other countries.
  • 4. Samples and analysis of episodes of current new formats.
  • 4.1. Non fiction formats (eg reality show, docusoup, competition, hidden camera, educational reality show, arranged documentary).
  • 5. Differences between commercial and public service television.
