The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
This course deals with diachronic view of the development of standardization processes in the area of Serbo-Croatian language, also known as a "central South-Slavonic diasystem" (D. Brozović), that means standard Croatian and Serbian language. Lectures will also deal with more general themes of territorial expansion of old Štokavian, Čakavian and Kajkavian dialects, Glagolitic literature of the Middle Age Croatian territories, changes that lead to establishment of new Štokavian dialects, gradual marginalization of Čakavian and Kajkavian dialects in Croatia, Serbian form of Church Slavonic language as a standard language in Serbia, contribution of Vuk Karadžić in the replacement of Church Slavonic with widely-spoken Serbian, development of standard Croatian with focus on cultural importance of individual dialects, era of the so-called Serbo-Croatian and problems of standardization of standard Serbian and Croatian in 20th century. Issues of standard Bosnian and Montenegrin language standardization will be discussed during the lectures as well.
Learning outcomes
Absolvent of this course will gain knowledge about the difficult question of relation between Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian and Montenegrin language, that means languages that were accepted as Serbo-Croatian before 90´s of 20th century.

  • - The last stage of Old Church Slavonic language, creation of the individual languages from phonetic and morphological point of view.
  • - Glagolitic literary tradition and the Croats, Church Slavonic period and the Serbs.
  • - Russo-Slavic and Slaveno-Serbian era of development of Serbian language.
  • - Enlightenment thoughts and their influence on forming modern standard languages. D. Obradović and the Serbs.
  • - 19th century: Illyric movement and the Croats (reform of Lj. Gaj), Vuk S. Karadžić and the Serbs. Relation between Serbian and Croatian language, ambition to have a common language - Serbo-Croatian, so-called Vienna literary agreement.
  • - The Zagreb, the Zadar and the Rijeka philological school, followers of Vuk S. Karadžić in Croatia.
  • - Important milestones in the development of Serbian and Croatian in 20th century (Croatian in the ISC, so-called Novi Sad Agreement, Declaration on Croatian Literary Language.
  • - Affirmation of Bosnian (Bosniak) and Montenegrin language.
