Course objectives
The aim of the course is to acquire necessary skills in working with relevant scholarly literature, carrying out literary research, making of commentaries and notes of the dissertation. It introduces the basics of translation work to the students (theory and praxis of translation).
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to present parts of their dissertation (possibly in a form of comprehensive studies) based on primary sources and together with references to secondary literature. They will master the necessary skills for translating medieval literary (or diplomatic) source material.
Syllabus
  • Bloc teaching – tutors from all three historic languages of the Czech lands are present (Latin, Czech, German):
  • Problems of critical study of medieval primary sources;
  • problems with translating medieval texts;
  • attempts at translating selected literary sources (editerd or commented);
  • presentation of doctoral dissertations.
Literature
  • Literature is assigned based on the topics of the dissertations.
  • Literatura: dle zvolených témat doktorských disertací.
Teaching methods
Seminar presentation of doctoral projects and translating outcomes, seminar discussion.
Assessment methods
Regular and active class participation; presentation of the dissertation.
