Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide students with an overview of basic research and application areas of health psychology and mental hygiene and broaden the knowledge base about the context and consequences of mental stress and prevention of physical illness and mental disorders. The content of the course is based on a holistic, bio-psycho-eco-social conception of human existence in health and disease.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course the student will be able to understand the effect of stressors on mental and physical health; to clarify the possibilities and ways of coping with stress; to determine and characterize the types of health-related behavior; to use the information for formulation of practical recommendations on maintaining mental balance, health and prevention of the Burn-out syndrome.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction to health psychology and mental hygiene. History, core topics, basic terms, leading representatives, professional societies and academic journals, related fields. 2. Development of the concept and definition of health. Bio-psycho-socio-environmental concept of health. Health determinants. Mental health and quality of life, adaptation. Health-related behavior. Self-regulation of behavior: bad habits, their recognition and elimination. 3. Risk and protective factors affecting the relationship between health and disease. Vulnerability and resilience. Key concepts of psychological resilience. Salutoprotective characteristics. Optimism in relation to health and health-related behavior. 4. Stress. Stressors and salutors. Stress management strategies. Self-regulation of emotions and thinking. Burnout syndrome. Prevention and intervention of burnout syndrome. 5. Well-being and life satisfaction. Opportunities to increase personal well-being. 6. Relaxation methods, imagination, suggestion and autosuggestion.
