Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide introduction to Byzantine Studies and to present a brief survey of the history of Byzantine literature.
Learning outcomes
Students will become familiar with the most significant Byzantine authors, they will understand the specifics and the patterns of development of the Byzantine literature and they will be able to use the information to understand Modern Greek literature better. With the use of dictionaries, students will be capable of understanding Byzantine literary texts. They will be able to understand the basics of Byzantine philology and Byzantology on the whole and they will understand the relation of the field to Modern Greek studies.

Active participation and a presentation. Written and oral exam aimed at testing the student’s insight into the main theories, concepts and methodologies of the discipline, or in the work of the main representatives of the scholarly discourse, and at checking the student’s ability to connect relevant facts into logical relations.
