Course objectives
The aim is to enable students to deepen the competencies of reference librarian.
The student is responsible for the functioning of the assigned reference desk. They come in direct contact with users and become familiar with their information needs.
Students who can not provide the services in person will complete assigned work: reference guide for users.
All students have an oportunity to consult with a librarian.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to:
- evaluate the services of the Central Library and propose their improvement;
- provide reference consultation / prepare reference guide for users.
Students will also be involved in ongoing library projects.
Syllabus
  • Except for point 1, this applies only to students who complete the practice in person. Students who can not participate in the provision of services will complete assignement and will consult it at least twice during the semester.
  • 1) Introductory lecture
  • 2) Self-study, followed by quiz
  • 3) Individual training and consultations with librarian
  • 4) 25 hours of in-person reference work
  • 5) Introduction to descriptive cataloguing (1 hour during practice)
  • 6) Completion of assigned tasks (during practice)
  • 7) Final oral evaluation of students' work and evaluation of assigned tasks (1 hour during practice)

Assessment methods
For in person practical training:
- quiz
- completion of subject cataloguing training
- completion of simulated reference consultation
- performance of assigned tasks and duties
In the case of failure to meet any of the conditions, the student will receive an extra work.
For students preparing research guide:
- quality of presented material
- at least two face-to-face consultations in which student present the progress of their work and receive feedback
