Course objectives (in Czech)
The course aims to familiarize the students with different roles and current practices in the localization industry, give them an opportunity to try several roles, reinforce their creative translation skills and empower them to embrace different roles.
Learning outcomes (in Czech)
After completing the course, the students will:
- understand different roles in the creative translation process;
- know how to cooperate efficiently;
- be able to switch between different roles and skillsets;
- be able to outline and follow creative instruction (brief, style guides);
- be familiar with the LQA processes;
- know how to revise their creations efficiently;
- know how much effort it takes to produce high-standard transcreations;
- be familiar with new tools and perspectives.
Syllabus (in Czech)
  • 1. Introduction: Sprinters and long-distance runners. Tools and practices.
  • 2. Translation Today: Industry, MTPE, localization, self-revision.
  • 3. Literary Translation: Fiction, non-fiction, poetry, graphic novels.
  • 4. Translation: Summary, discussion and feedback to Team Assignment 1.
  • 5. Proofreading, Copy Editing: Workflow, workload, distancing.
  • 6. Reviews: LQA, lead reviewer, giving feedback.
  • 7. Literary Editing: Guest lecture.
  • 8. Editing and reviewing: Summary, discussion and feedback to Team Assignment 2.
  • 9. Transcreation, Creative Direction.
  • 10. (Copy)writing and Adaptation.
  • 11. Guest lecture.
  • 12. Transcreation and Creative Direction: Summary, discussion and feedback to Team Assignment 3.

Assessment methods (in Czech)
The students will be required to work on three major team assignments (one per month) and smaller individual assignments (weekly). At the end of the course, the students will be assigned a final project consisting of a translation and a small essay.
