- Course objectives
- The course reflects in particular the phenomenon of reassessment of cultural values after 1985 and it is focused on the analysis of so-called “returned literature” and the “new wave literature” as well as the literature of Russian emigration. A great attention is paid on the Russian 20th century uncensored literature in diachronic aspect, on the specifics of Russian conceptualism, postmodernism and metarealism and on new Russian documentary theatre.
- Learning outcomes
- After finishing the course, the student will be able:
- to identify and to sum up the basic features of modernism, conceptualism, soc-art, postmodernism, metarealism and so on;
- to identify and to sum up the notable features of the contemporary Russian literature, its key names, periods, movements and currents;
- to prove the knowledge of crucial texts for this literature (on basis of compulsory reading) and an ability to professionally analyze works of contemporary literature;
- to compare works of classical and postclassical literature;
- to work out his/her own analysis of a contemporary text. - Syllabus
- 1. The outline of the Russian literature from 1985 onwards. The new conception of interpretation of the 20th-century Russian literature, with respect to the intellectual, cultural and socio-political changes in Russia.
- 2. “Returned literature”. Uncensored poetry of the first half of the 20th century. OBERIU (Kharms, Vvedensky).
- 3. Uncensored poetry of the second half of the 20th century: Lianozov school authors (Kropivnicky, Kholin, Sapgir, Satunovsky), minimalism of Vsev. Nekrasov SMOG (Aleynikov, Gubanov).
- 4. The literature of Russian emigration (Nabokov, Solzhenicyn, Brodskiy, Dovlatov, etc.).
- 5. Moscow lyrical conceptualism (Prigorov, Rubinshtein).
- 6. The specifics of Russian post-modernism phenomenon.
- 7. Venedikt Yerofeyev’s poema “Moscow – Petushki” as protopostmodern text.
- 8. Postmodernism in V. Pelevin’s works.
- 9. Soc-art” and the works of V. Sorokin.
- 10. The “metaphysical realism” of Yuri Mamleyev.
- 11. “The harsh realism”. Z. Prilepin (new war literature).
- 12. New Russian drama: documentary theatre, verbatim (Grishkovets, Sigarev, Vyrypayev, Durnenkov and others).
