Course objectives
After completing the course, the student will master the knowledge in development of Ukrainian literature from its beginnings in the 8th century until the first half of the 19th century. After completing the course the student will be aware of the basic literary monuments of the individual stages of development of Ukrainian culture and literature and will be able to characterize them. The student will gain knowledge both in Ukrainian poetry and in the Ukrainian prose of the period. After completing the course, the student will be able to include writers and their works into individual stages. The knowledge gained in the course is to be used in other follow-up courses.
Learning outcomes
The student will be acquainted with the history, development trends and personalities of Ukrainian literature from the beginning to the middle of the 19th century.
Syllabus
  • Kievian Rus´ its culture, literary work, writing styles and genres. The Tale of Igor´s Campaign and its interpretation. Ukrainian Baroque. Cossack chronicles. Life and literary work of Hryhoriy Skovoroda. An overview of Ukrainian literature of the 19th Century. Characteristic of the era of national revival. Periodization, trends, artistic trends, genres. Founder of modern Ukrainian literature Ivan Kotliarevsky. Ukrainian burlesque school. Ukrainian fables and storytellers (Y. Hrebinka, P. Hulak-Artemovsky, L. Hlibov) Ukrainian romanticism and its main personalities. The peak of Ukrainian romanticism in Schevchenko´s literary work. The beginnings of modern Ukrainian prose. Hryhory Kvitka and sentimentalism in his literary work. Marko Vovchok and her short stories. Birth of a Ukrainian novel (P. Kulisch, A. Svydnycky).
