Course objectives
The course goal is reading of selected texts related to the history of Vietnam, its traditions, politics and international relations. Selected texts are analyzed and reviewed with relation to two main areas: A) continuity and innovations of Vietnamese traditions, B) Vietnamese politics and foreign relations. Ad A) Main intention is to identify original functions of continuing traditions. Ad B) Main intention is to identify: 1) problematic or high-risk factors of development in Vietnam or other Southeast Asian countries with relation to economic and other reasons; 2) political interpretation of selected texts. The course Analytical tutorial on the History of Vietnam is a profile core course of the study programme Vietnamese Studies. Content of this course and acquired knowledge will be also a part of the Final State Examination. The course is open for students of other study programmes.
Learning outcomes
After completion of the seminar, a student will be able to:
- orientate himself in a part of sources and scholarly works concerning the history of Vietnam;
- access critically the historical sources, popular and scientific literature;
- compare events and development in Vietnam with corresponding events in other Asian countries.
Syllabus
  • Contents of the seminar will issue from the lectures of the History of Vietnam and discuss more deeply key topics from the Vietnamese history and address international (interregional) contexts. The seminar will refer to main source texts and corresponding scholarly works.
