Course objectives
The course provides an insight into the traditional folk culture of East Slavic nations (Russians, Ukrainians, Belarusians, Rusyns). It covers topics such as ethnogenesis, traditional folk culture in contemporary context (festivals and celebrations, Orthodoxy as a cultural phenomenon, folklore, traditional costumes, livelihoods, folk architecture). The course reflects recent social processes such as postsocialist transformation, ethnicity, and nationalism as well.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, students will be able to orientate themselves in the traditional folk culture of East Slavic nations (Russians, Ukrainians, Belarusians, Rusyns). They will be capable of presenting ethnological characteristics of these nations, including their ethnogenesis; students will understand the traditional folk culture in a contemporary context, encompassing festivals and celebrations, Orthodoxy as a cultural phenomenon, folklore, and both tangible and intangible cultural heritage; they will be able to reflect upon recent social processes such as postsocialist transformation, ethnicity, and nationalism.
Syllabus
  • Introduction to the study of Eastern Slavs - basic historical and social overview, linguistic and territorial characteristics, ethnographic regionalization of Ukrainians, Russians, Belarusians, Rusyns
  • Nationalism and ethnicity, ethnoidentifing role of folk culture, specifics of the formation of modern nations of Ukrainians, Russians, Belarusians, Ruthenians
  • Orthodoxy as a cultural phenomenon
  • Rituals, holidays and festivals - tradition and present
  • Folklore - historical excursus and contemporary meanings
  • The material culture I - folk architecture and housing
  • Material culture II - crafts and livelihoods in the past and today
  • The cultural heritage of the Eastern Slavs - current form and protection (in Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, Slovakia, Poland)
  • Ukrainians, Russians, Belarusians, and Ruthenians in the context of the post-socialist transformation of society - transformations, crisis, migration

Lecture, individual student's work
Assessment methods
Attendance at lectures and discussion (60% of the grade), individual student's work - conducting an interview with a member of an East Slavic nation or other ethnographic field research or an assignment agreed individually with the lecturer (40% of the grade). Individual agreement in case of inability to attend lectures is possible.
