Course objectives
The aim of the course is to develop skills in interpretation of Japanese linguistic texts, while using the knowledge of Japanese language acquired in practical language courses. Students are introduced to the socio-historical backgrounds of modern Japanese linguistics, learn about specific methods of research and through linguistic texts meet the diversity of Japanese linguistic discourse regarding specific linguistic topics. A portion of the topics is set by the teacher, another part is chosen by the students (from a set) at the beginning of the course and according to students' preferences and interests. The course is recommended to students who want to develop their skills in reading and interpreting Japanese texts (e.g. for the purpose of a final thesis).
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students will be able to:
define selected phenomena of the Japanese language;
read and interpret common linguistic texts in Japanese;
explain selected phenomena of the Japanese language with respect to both synchronic and diachronic point of view;
apply his previous knowledge in metalinguistic approach to modern Japanese;
distinguish the Japanese linguistics and some specifics of the Japanese language;
formulate basic ideas about the relation between the system of language and culture;

Reading and interpretation of a linguistic text, work with related questions and tasks, development of vocabulary, discussion of selected problems.
Assessment methods
Final paper on a specified topic. Attendance of at least 70 % of classes is required.
